How to Plan a Vacation Trip with AI

One of the cool things about travelling is the sense of anticipation that builds during the research and planning stage. Where will I go? What will I do? Where will I sleep? Oh, so many questions. And oh so much online information, though not all of it useful. Google a search like “10 day trip in Vietnam” and you’ll have to cut through the paid ads, government tourism sites, package deals, and blog posts from umpteen years ago. I’m sure each page has a few useful nuggets of information, but I can’t waste time jumping between posts and YouTube videos hoping to find travel info that is more in line with my interests and priorities.

There’s a better way to plan and it starts with an AIPRM prompt. You see, I’ve learned to reverse engineer my travel planning. First I use ChatGPT to get real granular about my travel intentions, limitations, budget, and interests. Here’s an example. I try to avoid long bus rides on bumpy country roads in developing countries. I once spent 13 hours on a packed, overheated bus in Thailand. Never again. With an AIPRM prompt, I can add that parameter to the prompt.

Once I get the AI itinerary, I head back to Google and run searches to verify the ChatGPT output. Along the way, I often uncover new and interesting tidbits that I can add to the itinerary. I don’t think ChatGPT will replace Google searches (in the short term) but the AI does make the planning experience more strategic and rewarding.

Here’s my suggested prompt. Modify as required.

I’m looking to plan a 10 day trip to Vietnam. Start in Hanoi and end in Saigon. Each day I will take a bus or train but the bus trip time must be two hours or less. I want to spend $100 a day or less on hotels, food, and activities. I can use public transit and don’t mind walking. Recommend two budget sleeping options for each night. If there are any unique restaurants we should make sure to include in our trip, feel free to add those in. I don’t want to have more than 3 things to do per day.
