How to Create a Digital Adventure Story
How do parents and teachers get kids to read more? That’s a pretty important question in this age of shortened attention spans and never ending streams of 10 second video clips.
Well, here’s an idea. Engage kids in a project built around reading.
In this article, I show you how to use a story-based AIPRM prompt. Kids use the prompt to create their own adventure story, the kind that has more than one ending. Then, here’s the kicker, the kids use a free app to create a digital, clickable version of that adventure story.
Locating a prompt #
- Log into ChatGPT.
- On the AIPRM dashboard, click the Public tab.
- Go to the search field and enter Choose Your Own Adventure — Story Gamebook.
- Optionally, click the star icon to add the prompt to your Favorites list.
- Select the prompt.
Getting started #
Go to the input field and enter Start. The ChatGPT displays many story choices plus the option to create your own.
Follow the steps to create a story. The AI does a good job guiding the user to the end of the story with prompts at each step. It’s good fun that tickles curious minds and encourages kids to go back and try different paths.
Copying the story from the prompt (as it stands now) and converting it into an ebook format is almost impossible. Every time you go back to the story and run the prompt, the story changes a bit. You need to add something to the prompt.
Here’s an idea.
Editing the prompt #
You’re going to add instructions to the prompt. To edit a prompt, you have to fork (i.e. clone) the prompt. Forking is a premium AIPRM feature so make sure your AIPRM account is on a paid plan.
Follow these steps.
- Go to the prompt and click the View icon.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the window and click the Fork as Private Prompt button.
- Save the file with a different name.
Copy the text below. Then go to the Prompt Template field and paste in the text. Don’t delete any of the text that is already in the prompt:
If the user types “all steps” you display all story threads and options in sequence one at a time so the reader can copy and paste the entire story into an ebook. This rule must be followed.
Use words and letters to connect each option with the next steps in the story adventure.
Each adventure story thread will have a minimum of three steps and a maximum of 6 steps until the story end is reached and the game is over with a good or bad ending. Each step in the adventure has only two choices: a or b. This rule must be followed.
You’ll probably need to tweak the prompt to get a result that works for you. For instance, change the number of steps or prompt words all steps. Don’t forget to give the prompt a new name and then save it.
Generating a story #
Use the new prompt to generate the complete story in one round.
- Select the prompt.
- Go to the input field and enter Start. The ChatGPT displays many story choices plus the option to create your own.
- Select a number.
- When the AI asks for an answer, type all steps. The AI displays the full story which you can copy and paste into an ebook.
Creating an ebook #
There are many ways to create a simple ebook with links that let the reader choose their adventure. Here are two free online ideas.
Create an ebook with Google Sheets. Each step in the story gets a separate sheet. Paste in the whole story and then add buttons that link to the right adventure pages.
Create an ebook with Google Forms. It’s easy to work with and the buttons are already there. You just need to click the three dot icon and add the link.
When the ebook is done, send a link to friends and family. Makes a great present for the grandparents!
